Director of Data Governance

Position Summary:

The Director of Data Governance plays is a critical role focused on delivering analytical insights, improving data quality, and supporting the protection of sensitive data across the enterprise.  To do this, the selected leader will establish an enterprise data governance framework and ensure adherence to data policies, standards, and practices.  

This newly created position is key to building our future data and analytics capabilities.  An ideal candidate should be collaborative and dynamic and be able to work across the organization on a fast-paced and quickly evolving team. 

The leader will have four primary responsibilities:

1. Design and establish a data governance and management framework and roadmap to mature analytical capabilities, improve data quality, and increase the protection of data
2. Act as the liaison between business, IT, information security, and data teams to ensure data management processes are in place 
3. Implement and own master data management, data lineage, data dictionary and data literacy throughout the enterprise
4. Define roles and responsibilities related to data governance and ensure clear accountability for stewardship of information asset

Essential Functions:

• Partner with the Head of Data & Analytics and the VP of Data Engineering to develop and evolve a data platform strategy 
• Develop and manage a central repository with an easy-to-navigate index of data documents and assets to accelerate scoping and planning of new data initiatives
• Own and maintain core enterprise data assets such as data lineage and flow maps as well as data dictionaries
• Design and prioritize data governance programs to help us quickly scale and execute on our strategy
• Implement and continuously improve our data governance processes and policies based on the needs of the enterprise
• Develop and foster relationships with the business and shared services leaders to shape and transform our data culture
• Identify and implement opportunities for training and enhance communications to improve data literacy
• Establish data stewards for key data domains to drive accountability and oversight deeper into the organization
   

Education/Experience/Skills:

• BA/BS degree in an analytical field
• Deep understanding of the first principles of data management and governance design – not just what is leading practice but why it is leading practice
• 5+ years of experience working closely with data & analytics and 3+ years of data governance design and delivery experience
• Experience in the insurance industry, particularly E&S lines preferred; or a strong willingness to learn
• Ability to understand and communicate with technical and business experts
