Position Summary:

The Vice President of Data Engineering role is focused on creating a data infrastructure that can be leveraged across the enterprise to deliver insights.  The leader will have four primary responsibilities:

  1. Design and develop a data platform strategy to support the needs of the enterprise
  2. Partner with the head of Data and Analytics to support driving the commercialization of data
  3. Work closely with business leaders and product managers to set the prioritization for bringing data workloads to the data infrastructure platform
  4. Manage the Database Administrator’s (DBAs) for the enterprise

He/she will help create a team of engineers and analysts to help guide the data technology decisions supporting our business units and shared services functions.  They will work to ensure the company is selecting, building, implementing and supporting high quality, secure, and architecturally sound data platform that is tightly integrated and aligned with the ongoing business needs.  

This newly created position is critically important for the future of the company. An ideal candidate should be very collaborative in nature and be able to work across many business organizations. 
 

Essential Functions:

  • Lead a team of data engineers and analysts that create a cloud-native data infrastructure platform that can be leveraged across the enterprise
  • Create a data platform strategy to define, prioritize, and build robust and scalable capabilities for data acquisition, storage, integration, transformation, validation, accessibility/availability, and governance/compliance to support the goal to create actionable, data-driven insights
  • Partner with the head of Data and Analytics to create a data platform strategy to monetize Ryan Specialty Group’s data assets 
  • Implement the data platform strategy using modern data technologies and tooling such as Python, SQL, NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB), distributed computing (e.g., Apache Spark), and cloud-based data warehousing solutions (e.g., Snowflake) – all in accordance with CI/CD best practices
  • Develop and foster relationships with the business unit and shared services leaders to transform how Ryan Specialty Group collects, curates and consumes data
  • Support data governance to enable efficiency, continuous improvement and long-term success
  • Work with the architecture team to develop standards for data architecture

Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BA/BS degree 
  • At least 10 years of Data Technology design and delivery experience of solutions involving enterprise-level applications, databases and integration components
  • Strong proficiency with SQL 
  • At least 5 years of experience in E&S insurance industry
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience developing an enterprise-class, cloud-based data platform
  • Broad experience reviewing cross-domain, enterprise business capabilities to identify opportunities for services design and re-usability
  • Strong understanding of data enrichment, data transformation and data security
  • Experience with batch and real-time data pipelines
  • Experience with data modeling, data science and machine learning applications
