Interstate Insurance Management ("Interstate"), a division of Ryan Specialty Group Underwriting Managers, is looking for a Chief Underwriting Officer. Position Summary:

Interstate is seeking a Chief Underwriting Officer to lead the company into the next stage of remarkable growth.  Reporting directly to the Interstate CEO, the Chief Underwriting Officer will work in conjunction with CEO and executive management to create, lead, and implement strategies for Interstate.  Along with Interstate, this role will also help oversee the "RSG Underwriting Platform" which consists of Interstate, Transportation Underwriters from Interstate's sister company RT Specialty, and future acquisitions that specialize in Commercial Transportation.  The Interstate CEO is responsible for the RSG Underwriting Platform.  This position will be expected to achieve operational and financial goals to ensure profitable growth in current and future markets while contributing to new program development through underwriting expertise.  In addition, this position will lead, inspire, motivate and develop a large, diverse team of underwriting professionals to maximize their performance, productivities and enhance the client experience.

Essential Functions:

•    Effectively administer carrier underwriting guidelines, including rate and form filings; achieving carrier profitability targets.
•    In conjunction with CEO and CAO, refine priorities, targets and standards (metrics) for underwriting programs; review and evaluate the performance; provide feedback and calibrate as needed. 
•    Ensure compliance with relevant internal and external standards (i.e. underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements), and develop and implement policies and practices including internal audit processes and procedures.
•    Maintain high levels of internal and external client contact to generate growth opportunities in collaboration with internal underwriters and retail producers
•    Attend association meetings, trade shows, conventions, and other events as necessary.
•    Provide clarity to sales team and retail broker channel on our risk appetite in all key areas.
•    Manage and maintain excellent working relationships with insurance carrier partners; including management and underwriters; develop new carrier relationships when appropriate.
•    Build strong partnerships with internal management and underwriters in order to improve collaboration, identify opportunities to improve services and ensure client satisfaction. 
•    Ensure the appropriate people strategy is in place to recruit, retain, train and develop staff effectively.
•    Review, evaluate and report book metrics and profitability to CEO monthly.
•    Manage profitability of commercial transportation underwriting programs.
•    Review and suggest improvements to company underwriting systems.
•    Regular travel required as Interstate and the RSG Transportation Platform is a national team, with headquarters in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
•    Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Skills:

·    Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
·    CPCU designation desired.
·    Property and Casualty license mandatory with required continuing education.
·    Deep expertise in commercial transportation underwriting products/services with a focus on trucking; extensive commercial insurance knowledge.
·    In depth knowledge of U.S. commercial truck insurance and reinsurance market.
·    Deep expertise across a broad range of commercial transportation underwriting techniques and methods.
·    Demonstrated track record of profitable transactions and generating business growth.
·    Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate and influence at senior leadership level.
·    Excellent relationship management skills — must be able to work in a team environment.
·    Substantial management experience, including at senior levels; high quality coaching skills.
·    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
·    Excellent organizational skills.
·    Proficient with office technology tools.
·    Experience developing, refining and implementing functional strategy and embedding broader business strategy into the underwriting teams.
·    Must demonstrate high energy, enthusiasm, and flexibility; must be able to perform under pressure and handle multiple concurrent priorities.  
·    Eight to ten years underwriting management experience.
·    Prior MGA experience recommended; strong understanding of the commercial transportation/truck insurance carrier and MGA business.
